Bauer Media, the market leader in commercial radio, will start offering AI-enriched, real-time and local traffic announcements to radio listeners together with state-owned traffic management company Fintraffic. This is a socially significant project the kind of which has not previously been implemented in Finland.

The data economy will create hundreds of millions of euros in value for transport in Finland. In recent years, Fintraffic's role, which covers all modes of transport, has brought transport operators to the same table to jointly build a data-based traffic data ecosystem.

Finland took the lead in the 2023 Digital Barometer. The opportunities for utilising data and artificial intelligence are thus extensive, but we can still do better in harnessing data for business development.

Fintraffic will establish a traffic data export cluster with more than 10 key companies in the traffic and logistics sector. The companies act as the traffic data ecosystem’s export working group in the promotion of member companies and, more broadly, the export business in the traffic sector.

The autumn is coming, bringing darkness, rain and unpredictable road conditions with it. At the same time, the risk of traffic accidents increases. How can motorists promote safety in autumn road traffic via their own actions? The work on the traffic management system of Ring Road III between Highway 1 Turunväylä and Motorway 170 Itäväylä will be completed shortly. The renewed traffic information displays will be introduced as soon as at the turn of September and October.

Fintraffic road traffic centres operate 26 road and urban tunnels throughout Finland. The safety-critical nature of tunnels differs from that of the rest of the traffic environment, which is why ensuring uniform and safe operating methods is particularly important when working with tunnels. This has been addressed in the development of Fintraffic's road traffic management, and in recent years, for the first time ever a new training and testing method has been developed in Finland for the qualification of professionals working with tunnels. The slowdown of Finland’s national economy has been reflected in traffic volumes and heavy goods transport in particular during the first three months of the year.

Finding public transport services, timetables and routes is now easier than ever in Finland. The route planner opas.matka.fi was updated on 30 March 2023. The route planning services of other public transport service providers will also improve, as they mainly use data from the same backend system, which is now even more comprehensive for Finland as a whole.

As of autumn 2023, Fintraffic Road will be utilising Waze’s data in traffic information displays to streamline traffic flow on Ring Road III. Fintraffic is involved in the “Waze for cities” programme, in which partners can utilise traffic data collected by Waze and also share their own data with Waze.

Tender for a national aggregated database service

A survey conducted by Fintraffic indicates that there is a great need for centralised traffic data. Fully comprehensive data on traffic in urban street networks is not available as yet – for this reason, the real-time situational picture of traffic provided by navigators and map services, for instance, is often incomplete. Now, Fintraffic invites municipalities, contractors, service providers and IT system suppliers to come on board and share data to streamline traffic for everyone.
