Route planner updated: easier travel with route searches and real-time stop information

Finding public transport services, timetables and routes is now easier than ever in Finland. The route planner opas.matka.fi was updated on 30 March 2023. The route planning services of other public transport service providers will also improve, as they mainly use data from the same backend system, which is now even more comprehensive for Finland as a whole.

Route searches will update by themselves during your journey. More real-time information about connections will also be displayed, such as a bus’s ETA at the stop and other location data. The route planner service also contains even better information about disruptions and exceptional circumstances.

The route planner covers a significant proportion of Finland’s urban areas

The route planner service already includes real-time information on Fintraffic’s train traffic and HSL, Nysse and Oulu Region public transport. The introduction of a new routing engine and a real-time service has enabled the provision of more comprehensive real-time information about public transport all across Finland. The service will be expanded to cover an estimated 16 new operators, including real-time operator data from Rauma and official data from regions such as Vaasa, Jyväskylä, Rovaniemi and Kajaani.

The following new operators are also included in the route planner: Föli (Turku region), Vilkku (Kuopio region), LSL (Lahti region public transport), Lifti (Vaasa), JoJo (Joensuu region public transport), Hämeenlinna, Jouko (Lappeenranta public transport), Kotka region public transport, Koutsi (Kouvola), Linkkari (Rovaniemi local transport), Kajaani and Rauma.

Add your service’s data to the route planner

Fintraffic operates a nationwide open access point for mobility service data. If you, as a public or private traffic operator, want to get real-time data from your service into the route planner, you can do so by adding your service to the access point https://finap.fi/#/ and contacting Fintraffic (nap@fintraffic.fi). Information can also be published in the national route planner via this access point.

The regional route planners developed by Nysse and HSL, and the nationwide route planner opas.matka.fi, all use a shared service platform: Digitransit. HSL is responsible for the maintenance and development of all route planners in close cooperation with Fintraffic and TVV Lippu- ja maksujärjestelmä Oy.

Fintraffic collates all public transport routes and timetables in a national route planner at opas.matka.fi. It includes both long-distance and commuter services and timetables, and provides information about buses, coaches, trams, the metro, trains, ferries and air connections.
