Closures of St. Petersburg airspace are evident in Finland – number of overflights is also growing
The closures of the airspace of St. Petersburg have temporarily increased traffic in Finnish airspace. There has also been a slight increase in the number of overflights, and positive developments are observable in international traffic. The total volumes of road traffic early this year remained at the same level as in the previous year despite increased fuel prices. The total volume of train traffic increased moderately in both commuter and long-distance traffic.
Traffic’s Vessel Traffic Services prevented eight merchant shipping vessels from potentially running aground last year – rate of GNSS disruptions continued to be high
In 2025, Fintraffic’s VTS Centres prevented eight merchant shipping vessels from potentially running aground and stopped near-misses from turning into accidents. The year was marked by GNSS disruptions on satellite positioning systems, which caused trouble for vessels traversing the Gulf of Finland.
Predictive traffic management reduces emissions on roads and in the air
Emissions from traffic can also be reduced by keeping vehicles moving. Fintraffic reduces emissions by improving road traffic flow through predictive disruption alerts and speed management, and by coordinating flight routes and landings to minimise unnecessary waiting and acceleration.
Fintraffic in 2025: prioritising safety and efficiency in a volatile global climate
2025 brought a number of transport-related challenges, including unpredictable geopolitical turmoil, quickly shifting weather conditions and numerous disruptions. These circumstances emphasise the key task of Fintraffic – ensuring safe, smooth and reliable flow of traffic across all modes of transport.
Traffic increased towards the end of the year – moderate growth in rail and road traffic, record pace in digital services
Rail and road traffic increased in Finland towards the end of the year. Passenger numbers increased for commuter trains and long-distance services, and the number of passenger cars and vans on roads also grew year over year. On the other hand, the number of aircraft flying over Finnish airspace is historically low. At the same time, use of Fintraffic’s digital services grew by almost 30 per cent, and the Fintraffic App reached 130,000 downloads.
The strategic partnership between Fintraffic and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency keeps Finland moving
The cooperation between the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and Fintraffic is one of the backbones of the Finnish transport system. The partnership ensures smooth, safe and efficient mobility on roads, rails and at sea while providing significant added value to Finnish society.
The right doors have opened for Solita, Weivi and ScanwAi with the help of export cooperation
What does “Export as a Service” mean in practice? Accelerating export-driven growth is an important part of the task assigned to Fintraffic by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. What have we done to promote the export efforts of Finnish companies in practice? Let’s hear it from companies that are members of the export cluster coordinated by Fintraffic.
Fintraffic’s responsibility as traffic data compiler is increasing significantly
The Act on Digital Information Services in the Transport System was ratified last Friday. The Act, effective from 2026, increases Fintraffic’s responsibilities, further focussing its role in controlling traffic data across Finland.

Demand for digital transport services on the rise – Fintraffic Mobile crosses the 100,000-download mark
In the third quarter, the use of Fintraffic digital services grew by more than 60%, and the Fintraffic Mobile application crossed the 100,000-download mark. The application brings up-to-date traffic information directly to the user’s phone. There was a moderate increase in the volume of passenger rail traffic and a decrease in freight traffic. The winter forecast for seasonal traffic in Lapland is positive, and air traffic is expected to continue its growth.
Punctuality of trains improved, and number of trains increased from a year ago - Growth of heavy traffic on roads came to a halt
Rail traffic has continued to increase in April-June, especially in commuter train traffic. Trains arrived at their destinations more punctually than at the same time last year. In air traffic, the number of domestic and international flights has remained at the same level as during last year’s second quarter, but the number of overflights through Finnish airspace has decreased substantially. Growth in volume of heavy goods traffic halted on roads after the spring. Demand for traffic data is growing: Fintraffic’s digital services attracted 2.6 million visits, which is 40% more than the year before.
Aviation organisations join forces to curb growth in unruly passenger behaviour – Joint campaign uses the slogan “Put yourself in flight mode”
The Finnish aviation community is seeking shared solutions and coordinated measures to reduce unruly behaviour. In May, just before the busiest flight season, the community launches a joint campaign titled “Put yourself in flight mode”.
