In the third quarter, the use of Fintraffic digital services grew by more than 60%, and the Fintraffic Mobile application crossed the 100,000-download mark. The application brings up-to-date traffic information directly to the user’s phone. There was a moderate increase in the volume of passenger rail traffic and a decrease in freight traffic. The winter forecast for seasonal traffic in Lapland is positive, and air traffic is expected to continue its growth.
“The traffic data produced by Fintraffic is used by public authorities, companies and application developers alike. A significant increase in the use of our digital services indicates that there is demand for information. It is also very gratifying to see that Fintraffic Mobile has already found its way to the phones of more than 100,000 users,” says Fintraffic CEO Pia Julin.
Rail traffic has been steady - growth in commuter traffic, decrease in freight traffic
In the third quarter of the year, rail traffic has been primarily stable in Finland. Although the number of trains has remained close to last year’s levels, there has been growth in commuter traffic in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area due to, for example, an increase in the service offering. The volume of commuter train traffic increased by about 11% year over year. Long-distance traffic volume increased by 3.7%. The volume of freight traffic was 16% lower year over year.
The punctuality of rail services was considerably better in the third quarter of 2025 than last year at the same time. Train punctuality was 93.4% (91.7%) in commuter traffic, 88.5% (85%) in long-distance traffic and 94.9% (92.2%) in rail freight services. Track work was down by 14% year over year. These figures are impacted, for example, by the fact that, in 2024, there were several job-creating track projects under way in the Tampere traffic control area which have already been completed or are reaching completion. The volume of freight traffic toward Kouvola has been affected by such factors as the closure of a paper mill. The punctuality of trains has also been affected by storm damage and long-term track work, such as the delay in bridge work at the Tourujoki River in Jyväskylä.
Use of Fintraffic’s digital services grew by 60%
Traffic data produced by Fintraffic is utilised extensively, for example, in navigators, route planners and various digital services that facilitate ease of mobility in everyday life. In the third quarter of 2025, Fintraffic’s digital services were visited approximately 2.70 million times, marking a year-over-year increase of roughly 64% (1.64 million visits Q3/2024). The Fintraffic Mobile app, which won the Suomen paras asiakasteko 2024 award, is still our most popular service and has been used 1.74 million times.
In the third quarter of 2025, 1.39 billion calls were made in the traffic data APIs of Fintraffic’s Digitraffic service (1.52 billion Q3/2024). Traffic bulletins, weather camera images and real-time traffic volume data are distributed throughout Digitraffic.
During the third quarter of the year, approximately 4.38 billion API calls (4.40 billion Q3/2024) were made in the Digitransit platform to gain access to public transport trip data. A total of 61.27 TB of data was shared (62.12 TB Q3/2024). Finnish public transport journey planners make extensive use of the shared knowledge base through the Digitransit platform.
The decline in the number of API calls indicates that the interfaces have become more efficient: information is now available more quickly, concisely and with fewer API calls. In addition, some of the information has been transferred to other services.
High traffic volumes on a par with the previous year - growth plateaued
In July-September, the total road traffic volume on main roads (highways and main roads) increased slightly year over year (2.1%). The traffic volume of cars and vans increased by 2.3% year over year.
In the third quarter of the year, the volume of heavy traffic remained more or less at last year’s levels (-0.2%), and the downward trend that began towards the end of the previous quarter continued.
Number of overflights stabilised
Since April, Finnish air traffic volume has been on a slightly downward trend. However, the third quarter as a whole has seen a slight increase in international traffic, with the exception of July, when the number of passengers remained the same year over year. Domestic traffic, on the other hand, has remained stable, with an approximately 4% increase in growth.
The number of overflights has stabilised at a level well below those of last year, and there has been no increase in the volume of Chinese airline traffic through Finnish airspace. In addition, Indian and Middle Eastern airlines have significantly reduced their flight volumes. Compared to the same period last year, the number of overflights has decreased by approximately 11%.
The summer season is over for Russian and Kaliningrad traffic, and the volume of traffic in Kaliningrad is falling with the onset of autumn. Russian aircraft fly in international airspace over the Baltic Sea on their way to Kaliningrad.
The winter outlook for seasonal traffic in Lapland is positive. According to estimates, traffic volume is expected to continue increasing.
