One of the goals of the NELSON project is to enable interoperable maritime services that support safer navigation, more efficient traffic management and future-ready operations. NELSON is a €15 million EU co-funded project that brought together 10 partners from Finland, Sweden and Spain. The project has had a somewhat eventful beginning: since September 2025, 14 milestones have been completed, and numerous events and info sessions have been held to inform and involve project stakeholders.

Renovation of the Vuosaari tunnel is under way – traffic has transferred safely to the detour

Vuosaari tunnel substitute route ready for operation

The Vuosaari tunnel will be closed at the beginning of next year for extensive renovations, with traffic diverted to the official substitute route.  Multiple sections of the substitute route have been upgraded over the past year, and the currently tested substitute route is ready for diverted tunnel traffic next year. Official alternative route for Vuosaari road tunnel tested

The official alternative route for the Vuosaari road tunnel was tested between 16 and 18 June.

Improvements of Vuosaari road tunnel’s alternative route continue on schedule

The improvements of the alternative route of the road tunnel leading to Vuosaari Harbour continue according to plan. Following the winter break, the work will continue on week 8 when gabion baskets are installed in the junction of Itäväylä and Kallvikintie.

Improvement work on the alternative route of the Vuosaari road tunnel begins on 14 October

The alternative route for Vuosaari road tunnel on the section Itäväylä–Kallvikintie–Niinisaarentie–Vuosaari Harbour will be improved during late 2024 and spring 2025. Roadworks on the alternative route begin on Monday, 14 October 2024.  By improving the route, we are preparing for the extensive renovation of the Vuosaari tunnel’s technical features, which begins next year and will last for nearly one year, during which time the alternative route of the tunnel will serve as a detour.

Vuosaari road tunnel repairs to begin in spring 2025 - planning progressing on schedule

The schedule and method of implementation for the renewal of technical systems in the Vuosaari road tunnel have been established: work in the tunnel will begin with the dismantling of old systems in spring 2025.
