Traffic increased towards the end of the year – moderate growth in rail and road traffic, record pace in digital services
Rail and road traffic increased in Finland towards the end of the year. Passenger numbers increased for commuter trains and long-distance services, and the number of passenger cars and vans on roads also grew year over year. On the other hand, the number of aircraft flying over Finnish airspace is historically low. At the same time, use of Fintraffic’s digital services grew by almost 30 per cent, and the Fintraffic App reached 130,000 downloads.
The strategic partnership between Fintraffic and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency keeps Finland moving
The cooperation between the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and Fintraffic is one of the backbones of the Finnish transport system. The partnership ensures smooth, safe and efficient mobility on roads, rails and at sea while providing significant added value to Finnish society.

In the third quarter, the use of Fintraffic digital services grew by more than 60%, and the Fintraffic Mobile application crossed the 100,000-download mark. The application brings up-to-date traffic information directly to the user’s phone. There was a moderate increase in the volume of passenger rail traffic and a decrease in freight traffic. The winter forecast for seasonal traffic in Lapland is positive, and air traffic is expected to continue its growth.
Punctuality of trains improved, and number of trains increased from a year ago - Growth of heavy traffic on roads came to a halt
Rail traffic has continued to increase in April-June, especially in commuter train traffic. Trains arrived at their destinations more punctually than at the same time last year. In air traffic, the number of domestic and international flights has remained at the same level as during last year’s second quarter, but the number of overflights through Finnish airspace has decreased substantially. Growth in volume of heavy goods traffic halted on roads after the spring. Demand for traffic data is growing: Fintraffic’s digital services attracted 2.6 million visits, which is 40% more than the year before.

The National Traffic Information Database enables a significant leap in the development of future mobility services
The National Traffic Information Database combines data from over 300 sources into a common public transport database. “In the past, creation of mobility services used to require a software project; today, the same can be achieved by subscribing to a single interface.”
