Transport emissions are one of the most concrete topics in our environmental action, as transport causes one fifth of Finland’s climate emissions. We shoulder responsibility for the environment by making our transport system more sustainable on land, sea and air. Our environmental action is founded on two pillars: managing the environmental impact of our own business and value chain and influencing emissions throughout the entire transport system.
Fintraffic – influencing environment-first mobility
Our operations can significantly influence traffic flow and service level in the transport system – and thereby impact emissions from various modes of transport.
- Environmentally efficient and optimised traffic management helps us reduce traffic emissions and the negative environmental impacts of the transport system.
- Through data and transport solutions, we can streamline travel and logistics chains and prevent environmental damage and accidents.
- We create new solutions to reduce disruptions and congestion.
Towards carbon neutrality
Fintraffic has defined emission reduction targets as per the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) criteria that comply with the 1.5°C target: 63% by 2035 and 90% by 2050. These targets are aligned with low-carbon pathways towards the 1.5°C global target.
Key decarbonisation measures include:
- transition to fossil-free energy
- electrification of vehicle fleets and use of renewable fuels
- improving in-premises energy efficiency and technical infrastructure
- guidance related to and systematic measurement of low-emission procurements
- low-emission conversion of backup power systems (e.g. backup power generators)
Therefore, we have significant opportunities to mitigate climate change and protect the environment with the operators of the transport ecosystem – together, our carbon handprint is much larger than our carbon footprint.
Our commitment
- We are an environmentally oriented group: an enabler of a smooth and environmentally efficient transport system, an influencer for environmentally driven travel, and we prevent accidents and environmental damage.
- We will continue to develop our carbon handprint and footprint calculations, our environmental and impact reporting, and our own environmental capabilities at every level.
