In 2022, Fintraffic was highly successful in ensuring both traffic safety and the operational reliability of Finland’s traffic management. In addition to carrying out its special mandate, Fintraffic also achieved its goals in promoting the digitalisation of traffic and logistics in Finland, developing transport services, and boosting its operational efficiency in spite of challenging conditions.

Fintraffic serves all transport users by providing traffic management services, digital services, open data and a real-time situational picture of traffic. Fintraffic is also the first company in the world to provide traffic management services for all modes of transport. Many operators are making more extensive use of data and digital solutions. If you use maps and navigators, you will benefit from Fintraffic’s data in services provided by, for example, Google Maps, Waze, Apple and HERE. Route planners for Finnish public transport could not function without the data shared by Fintraffic.

“The digitalisation of traffic” refers to the entire transport system’s ability to produce and utilise data in a way that makes traffic safer, smoother, more environmentally friendly and more economically efficient. This requires cooperation: The data ecosystem coordinated by Fintraffic already includes about 160 traffic operators. Demand for the open data shared by Fintraffic reached a record high in 2022 with 424 (386) TB of data being transferred via open interfaces.

By taking determined action to reduce emissions throughout the transport system, Fintraffic is firmly supporting both the Paris Agreement’s climate objectives and Finland’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035. For example, the data platform and apps created for ports are helping to optimise the speeds of ships and trucks, which leads to significant reductions in both emissions and fuel costs. Finland is at the forefront of Europe when it comes to harnessing digitalisation to improve the operational reliability, service level and efficiency of traffic.

Events in 2022:

  • Fintraffic achieved the EUR 30 million efficiency target set for the company for 2019–2022.
  • The data ecosystem coordinated by Fintraffic already has more than 160 organisations working to promote digitalisation and service development in the traffic sector. 22 operators have signed the Rulebook for the Traffic Data Ecosystem, which was jointly formulated through collaboration within the sector.
  • The use of the Port Activity app was expanded within Finland, and the app was also introduced in Sweden.
  • At the COP27 Climate Change Conference in Egypt, solutions developed by Fintraffic Vessel Traffic Services were presented as model examples of how digitalisation promotes sustainable maritime traffic.
  • The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and Fintraffic Railway Ltd signed an alliance agreement for the development and verification phase of the Digirail project. One of the project’s aims is to renew the train control system.
  • Fintraffic’s Avia College won a tender issued by Avinor, Norway’s air navigation service provider, and will now provide them with air navigation training in 2023–2025.
  • Fintraffic was awarded the 2022 Hyvän mielen työpaikka (Mental Health Friendly Workplace) certificate.

Well-functioning transport and logistics connections are Finland’s lifeblood

“Ensuring the operational reliability of maritime transport and the protection of fragile marine nature is important for society. It’s therefore invaluable that our vessel traffic service professionals prevented no less than 21 vessels from potentially running aground during the year. Our safety efforts were also successful in other modes of transport, and we played our part in ensuring Finland’s security of supply in exceptional circumstances.   In addition to ensuring traffic safety, we’re also seeking to identify the impacts of climate change on our business and the impacts our operations have on the climate, the environment and biodiversity. We’re helping to make significant reductions in traffic emissions through environmentally efficient and optimised traffic management, digital services, open data and close cooperation with our partners,” says Fintraffic’s CEO, Pertti Korhonen.

The Fintraffic Group’s revenue in 2022 amounted to EUR 228.9 (209.7) million and the result before taxes to EUR 6.9 (6.1) million. The company’s equity ratio was 57.6 per cent and liquidity was strong.

Fintraffic employed an average of 1,133 (1,126) professionals in 2022.
