Traffic Management Company Fintraffic Ltd has published its annual report for 2020. The company has made firm progress in implementing its strategy and promoting the construction of a safer, smoother and more environmentally friendly transport system in Finland.
The Annual Report contains the Sustainability Report, the Report of the Board of Directors, and the Governance and Remuneration Statement.
Investments in digitalisation and the transport ecosystem
Our vision is for Finland to have the world’s safest, smoothest and most environmentally friendly traffic. Fintraffic’s strategy, which we updated in the autumn, also has the same objective.
In our spearhead projects, we are focusing on increasing digitalisation in Finland’s transport system and building a functional ecosystem in which information flows efficiently between various modes of transport, routes, service providers and end customers. Enhancing information flow will give operators greater opportunities to provide even better services in travel and logistics chains.
We further developed our existing digital services: Digitraffic, Traffic Situation and Feedback Channel. An online service for drone operators was launched at the beginning of 2021.
Safety at a good level; increased importance of data security
Fintraffic handled its core task in an exemplary manner in 2020, that is, providing road, rail, maritime and air traffic control and associated traffic information.
Our traffic control on land, at sea and in the air provided almost uninterrupted service throughout the year. Service efficiency improved thanks to a number of measures, such as process development, investments in information systems and technology, and the competitive tendering of purchases.
Traffic safety, which is our number-one priority, was at a good level. Maritime traffic control prevented nine vessels from running aground.
The significance of information and cybersecurity also increased during the year, and considerable investments were made in this area.
Sustainability efforts have a major indirect impact on society and the environment
Fintraffic’s key sustainability objective in 2020 was to identify materiality themes for business functions and corporate responsibility. We performed a materiality analysis to determine our materiality themes and created a roadmap that will show us the steps we need to take to reach the target state.
They indicate that Fintraffic’s services have significant direct and indirect impacts on society and the environment. For example, thanks to having some of the best air navigation services in Europe, Finland has an efficient airspace that noticeably reduces air traffic emissions.
By increasing digitalisation, we will be able to promote more efficient logistics chains for goods. Even a one per cent increase in efficiency would lower transport emissions by up to 44,000 tons of CO2 per year, and would also reduce companies’ logistics costs by hundreds of millions of euros. The digitalisation of the rail traffic control system would increase current track capacity by up to a third.
By focusing on sustainability, we can help our customers, stakeholders and the whole of Finland to develop an even more sustainable transport system.
This is Fintraffic’s first sustainability report in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards.
