Courses
This course provides qualified Air Traffic Controllers or other ATS personnel with the necessary competencies to work as OJTI/STDI. Additionally, the course can be taken to renew the validity of an expired OJTI/STDI endorsement.
Course structure
In this 5-day course, we use a mix of methods that gives the participant a good grasp of the course material. Methods include classroom lessons, group work, facilitated discussions, demonstration, exercises, briefing/debriefing, skill acquisition, role-play, case studies, self-study, and e-learning. Throughout the course, a competence assessor applies continuous assessment following Commission Regulation (EU) No 2015/340.

The course covers topics such as, but not limited to:
- The impact of our training philosophy on the structure and delivery of training.
- Human factors relating to teaching and learning, behaviour, teamwork, communication, stress and fatigue management, etc.
- Challenges in the student’s performance, how to help students to overcome challenges in the training.
- Appropriate OJTI/STDI techniques during co-operation agreements/briefing, training on the position, and debriefing.
- OJTI/STDI techniques on coaching, instructing, monitoring, and observing and their impact.
- The role of the OJTI when training colleagues in the operational environment.
- Assessment methods and report writing, which covers competency-based training and assessment models, dedicated and continuous assessment, and the importance of quality of report writing.
- Unit Training Plan (UTP) and Continuation Training.
- Practical training: applying the acquired knowledge and understanding through scenario-based exercises including role-play. The training is conducted in the simulator
- The theory of learning and essential aspects to enhance motivation.
- Stress and fatigue and awareness of the importance of developing resilience.
- A modern and positive approach to training and how to establish co-operation agreement.
- The importance of effective communication/interaction with students and ATCO colleagues.
- Commission Regulation (EU) No 2015/340 regarding unit training and OJTI/STDI endorsements.

The course refreshes and strengthens the knowledge and skills of qualified OJTI/STDI. This increases their performance, motivation, and confidence in a wide variety of training events and situations.
Completing the course revalidates the participant’s OJTI/STDI endorsement. If their endorsement has expired, we can conduct an additional assessment of competence after the course-end. This assessment is done upon request and is not part of the course.
Course structure
This course is 1day in duration and remote. Learning activities integrate scaffolding teachings (building on your own experience) and reflection as a part of the training. Teamwork is central to the course.

- The importance of self-development, self-awareness, intrinsic motivation, and confidence in their own instructional competency.
- Stress resilience, and how to help oneself and the student cope with stress
- Factual written and verbal pedagogically-oriented communication.
- The impact of the training philosophy on structuring and delivering the training.
- Human factors concerning teaching and learning, self-development, teamwork, learning mindset, communication, etc.
- Teaching to different generations of students.
- Assessment methods and report writing.

This course provides qualified ATCOs or other ATS personnel with the knowledge and skills they need to perform competence assessments on colleagues and/or students in the operational environment. Furthermore, it deepens appreciation for competence assessment’s beneficial impact on safety, as well as the development of the unit and the individual.
After completion of this course, the participants know:
- The many possibilities of competence assessment.
- The regulatory requirements regarding the privileges of an assessor endorsement, as well as the requirements regarding the issue, validity and revalidation of the assessor endorsement and unit endorsement.
- The assessor’s role and responsibility, including the formal and informal requirements.
- How to assess operational competence.
- Practical and theoretical assessment methods.
- Suitable communication tools and strategies.
Course structure
The Assessor course is 4 days in duration. We adapt our specific mix of methods to the background of the participants, and the estimated time we spend on individual subjects can vary according to the needs of the group. Our various methods include classroom lessons, group work/discussions, team/individual exercises, role-play, case studies, and self-study.

- Role of the assessor. Reflecting on the different experiences and operational challenges in unpredicted situations such as the pandemic.
- Interpersonal Interaction. The ways in which inclusiveness and self-awareness are essential for the objectivity of an assessment.
- Competence. Understanding reasons for performance variability and what behaviours an assessor must observe.
- Assessment. Exchanging experiences about assessing students and ATCOs (dedicated and continuous assessment) and how we can align standards amongst assessors in the units.
- Regulation. Refreshing knowledge about the EU licencing requirements and discuss how those have been exercised in practice.
- Assessment debriefing. Appreciating the importance of factual feedback, verbal and written.
- Practical training. Applying the acquired knowledge and understanding through scenario-based exercises. The focus is to make objective observations and discuss differences between the students’ evaluations of the performance from the scenarios.
Prerequisites
Qualification as an Air Traffic Controller or other ATS personnel, for example AFIS.
Compliant with Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/340
This course is for qualified Competence Assessors who need to refresh their knowledge, so they can continue assessing colleagues/students in the operational environment. Furthermore, it increases understanding of competence assessment’s beneficial impact on safety and the development of the unit/individual.
Completing this course revalidates the participant’s assessor endorsement. If their assessor endorsement has expired, we can conduct an additional assessment of competence after the course-end. This renewal is done upon request and is not part of the course.
After completion of this course, the participants know:
- Competence and how it is influenced by changes in skill patterns.
- The role and responsibilities of the competence assessor in various challenging situations.
- The competency-based model and apply performance criteria (objectives) through scenario-based exercises.
- The importance of standards for the quality of the assessment process.
- The importance of objectivity and how to maintain it.
- The importance of having quality assessment reports.
