Sustainable Flow Project’s Digital CO₂ Monitoring Tool Enters Production Use

The Sustainable Flow project has reached a major milestone: the digital CO₂ monitoring tool developed within the project enters production use. The tool supports ports across the Central Baltic region in reducing emissions and strengthening data-driven decision-making.

The digital solution enables ports to measure, analyse and manage their carbon dioxide emissions. It supports greener logistics planning and helps translate sustainability goals into concrete, operational actions that contribute to the decarbonisation of port operations. The solution has been developed through close collaboration in close cooperation with project partners and pilot ports in Finland, Sweden, Åland, Estonia and Latvia.

The year-long development process was strongly guided by ports’ real operational needs, with solutions tested and refined in practical port environments before entering production.

From pilot phase to everyday use

The ports of Mariehamn in the Åland Islands Finland and Norrköping and Oxelösund in Sweden were the first pilot ports to adopt the tool. Both played a key role in testing its functionality and shaping further development which ensured that the tool effectively supports operational decision-making and responds to everyday challenges in port operations.

The released version is now available to all ports participating in the project. As a whole, the collaboration with the pilot ports has been very successful. According to Cathrin Merino, Project Manager at Transportföretaget, ports’ feedback and contribution in the development thas been crucial throughout the process.

"We are in fact very excited for the upcoming period after the New Year when the ports will actually start using the tool in their operations. This coming spring, we will also be able to gather emissions statistics for the year 2025 and track the progress towards the project's goal of a 10% reduction in emissions."

Digital solutions driving the green transition

The CO₂ monitoring tool is a core element of the Sustainable Flow project’s objective to promote low-emission and energy-efficient port operations in the Central Baltic region. By combining digital innovation with renewable energy initiatives, the project supports both the green transition and the long-term competitiveness of the maritime sector.

There are still months left with the project. During the final four months, the tool will be further refined, including user interface improvements, enhanced usability and additional features, ensuring that the solution remains valuable beyond the project’s lifetime.

Furthermore, now that the tool moves into production use, the focus shifts to sharing best practices, supporting implementation across partner ports and exploring opportunities for continued development after the project concludes.
