Registration mandatory for drone flyers – a new service launched

From the beginning of February onwards, flyers of unmanned aerial vehicles, i.e. drones, must register, get acquainted with learning materials on flying and complete an online test. Fintraffic Air Navigation Services has launched a new SkyNavX service portal for drone users, where, in the future, both professional and spare-time flyers can register for Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

“The popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles has been increasing rapidly in recent years. In the coming years, utilising drones in commercial business will increase. This is why it is important that we have good services in use here in Finland, with the help of which we can ensure the smooth use of air space between different types of aircraft. In the future, we want to develop our SkyNavX service into a service portal for drone flyers, where they can find, for example, the recognized air picture, aeronautical information service and a trading place. In the early stages, the service can be used to register for the register of drone users maintained by Traficom”, says director Pasi Nikama from Fintraffic Air Navigation.

More information on the registration of drone users, learning materials and the test is available on the www.droneinfo.fi site maintained by Traficom, where you can also access the SkyNavX service portal (https://skynavx.fi). In the service portal, registration as a drone operator is possible both as a private person and as an organisation, and it is also possible to sign up remote pilots for a pilot test.

From the beginning of February onwards, all users of drones with a camera must, without exception, register according to the regulation. Drones without a camera and weighing less than 250g or defined as toys are excluded from registration. It has been estimated that in Finland there are around 50,000 drones affected by the new regulations. The aim of the amendment, which is based on an EU regulation, is to ensure the safety of both the growing number of unmanned aircraft and regular air traffic.

The new SkyNavX online service has been developed by Fintraffic Air Navigation Services. The filing of registrations to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s register has been done in cooperation with Traficom.
