
Fintraffic's Vessel Traffic Services prevented 21 potential groundings last year

In 2022, Fintraffic’s Vessel Traffic Services prevented as many as 21 possible groundings. This can be seen in the recently published annual report on grounding prevention by Fintraffic’s Vessel Traffic Services.
Fintraffic’s Vessel Traffic Services ensure the safety and smoothness of maritime traffic on the Finnish coast, in nearby international waters and on the Saimaa deep fairway. In 2022, the company prevented 21 possible groundings, 18 of which were prevented on the Finnish coast and three in the control area of international waters under Finnish responsibility.
“At our VTS Centres, we ensure the safety of vessel traffic, such as cargo ships and passenger ships, around the clock, every day of the year. The situation with all possible groundings prevented last year was that a vessel was heading towards shallow waters but changed direction after a contact from a VTS Centre. The VTS Centres also assisted six vessels in navigation to ensure the safe passage of vessels in the fairway area,” says Sari Talja, Operative Director of Fintraffic’s Vessel Traffic Services.
