The DigiMar project focuses on clear and safe maritime communication – instructional videos now available

The first versions of the educational videos from the DigiMar project have been released, supporting navigational safety by improving routine maritime communication. These openly available videos are primarily aimed at VTS professionals and students, and they are based on international guidelines and authentic educational recordings. The videos offer practical support for developing communication skills.

The educational videos created in the DigiMar project were presented for the first time this week to the project's partner stakeholders.

The newly released 20 videos provide practical tools for improving routine maritime communication, focusing on areas such as clear message structure, terminology used in vessel traffic services (VTS), and the accuracy and clarity of communication.

"The educational video series released in the DigiMar project focuses on routine maritime communication, which enables those working in VTS to communicate more effectively and consistently. This improves the clarity of messages in the international maritime environment and particularly supports the everyday communication in vessel traffic service. The videos are available at basic and more advanced levels to meet the needs of VTS students and professionals," says Project Manager Maiju Kaski from Fintraffic's Vessel Traffic Services.

The video material is based on the IALA's VTS Voice Communications and Phraseology publication, as well as IMO and ITU communication materials.

The goal of the DigiMar project is to improve maritime navigational safety through digital education. The project focuses on developing educational videos and chatbots. Digital tools are also being utilized to create language and communication databases and to develop maritime communication simulation tasks. The database and potentially the chatbot may later be used to develop a broader maritime communication library that could be applied in AI-based speech recognition and communication management solutions.

The DigiMar project (Digital Education for Maritime Communication) is an Erasmus+ project running until the fall of 2026 - aiming to develop the routine communication skills of maritime professionals, particularly between vessels and VTS centers. The project is coordinated by the University of Ljubljana in Slovakia, with partners from Fintraffic, Croatia, Montenegro, Sweden, and Norway.
