Port Activity application and the rulebook work of Traffic Data Ecosystem made it to Sitra’s list of the Most Interesting Data Economy Solutions in Finland

Sitra’s first Most Interesting Data Economy Solutions in Finland list highlights the 24 most interesting data solutions from various industries and regions in Finland. The Port Activity application developed by Fintraffic and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, as well as the rulebook work by Traffic Data Ecosystem, were both identified as successful examples of promoting data economy.

The Port Activity application developed by Fintraffic and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences was included in the Services for Companies category. The application streamlines port traffic and operations.

Fintraffic’s project manager Olli Soininen describes the Port Activity application as an excellent example of the success and large-scale scalability of a data economy project.

“The solution was originally developed for only two ports, and now it has been implemented in more than 20 ports. A big thanks goes to the EU innovation funding, which has been the starting force of the project, as well as the ports of Finland and Sweden, whose important contribution has been at the heart of the project. In addition, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) deserves recognition for guiding the service design in the EU project phase,” says Soininen.

The evaluation panel describes the solution as follows:

“Port Activity application is an excellent example of a successful data economy project and solution scalability. Originally, the solution was developed for two ports, but now it is in use in more than 20 ports in different countries.”

The rulebook work of the 3 year old Traffic Data Ecosystem, which has already gathered about 200 organizations, was also noted in the infrastructure category on the list. Both the model itself and its successful use in the transport sector were acknowledged.

Fintraffic’s ecosystem and technology director Janne Lautanala considers the Traffic Data Ecosystem to be an excellent example of active ecosystem activity.

“A big thank you goes to the participants, whose active work has enabled traffic data to be shared in a functional form - enabling both operational efficiency and new business,” says Lautanala.

The evaluation panel describes the solution as follows:

“The data economy rulebook is like a modern business co-cultivation guide. With it, large and small transport operators have been able to see future opportunities together, connect their data together in a business-oriented way, and envision better services than they could have done alone. Services based on the rulebook and jointly envisioned serve their customers more comprehensively, are cheaper, and more widely accessible than before. The first successful joint services seem to be fueling new openings in other business areas in Finland, the EU, and elsewhere in the world.”

“The traffic ecosystem appears to its users as better, more comprehensive, affordable, and more widely accessible services. For the transport system, it provides smoothness and predictability. Clarity of mutual rules and roles for service and part producers enables new business alongside the old. This has been recognized by key Finnish transport operators.
