The official alternative route for the Vuosaari road tunnel was tested between 16 and 18 June. Several improvements have been made to the route, such as additional lanes for the Itäväylä and Kallvikintie intersection and the Niinisaarentie and Kallvikintie roundabout. In addition, the Niinisaarentie and Porslahdentie roundabout as well as the Niinisaarentie and Satamakaari intersection have been modified to meet the needs of special transports.
During the testing, the smoothness of the connection from Ring Road III to Itäväylä, the functioning of new lanes at the Itäväylä and Kallvikintie intersection and the smooth flow of traffic at the Niinisaarentie roundabout, at the Satamakaari intersection, on Rahtarinkatu and on Kallvikintie were monitored.
Traffic followed smoothly for the most part throughout the testing period, even though queueing occurred during the peak hours of Tuesday afternoon. The busy truck traffic during Midsummer week was also apparent on the route.
The observations made during testing will be analysed during July and any further measures will be taken to ensure the functioning of the alternative route.
The official alternative route for the Vuosaari road tunnel will serve as a detour, when the Vuosaari road tunnel’s extensive renovation and repair work begins next year. The work is to last about one year.
